GWAR’s Bloody Pit Of Horror
No.99, aired December 1, 2010.
This show was a primer for the GWAR concert at U of R’s Riddell Center on December 3 (see setlist below). Part 1 featured four songs from the classic Scumdogs Of The Universe album, and Part 2 included the entire Bloody Pit Of Horror suite from GWAR’s spanking new album of that title.
But what words? What spoken word component to set alongside the unspeakable violence that is GWAR? Hmmm ..... what else but the Holy Bible? What but the wrath of Yahweh could be bloody or arbitrary enough go head to head with the wrath of GWAR? So select passages from the crazy prophetic book of Ezekiel (see chapter nos. below) were played along with instrumental tracks between GWAR selections.
As far as the serendipitous sonic adventures that characterize Naval Aviation In Audio go, this GWAR episode turned out to be quite memorable, even more than most - so I can’t resist inserting below some (unplanned) quotes from Ezekiel that by chance provided perfect introductions to outrageously violent GWAR songs.
Part 1
1. Horror Of Yig – GWAR
2. Blah Overture – Blah Blah 666
3. The Salaminizer – GWAR
4. Dune – Bob Evans -- Ezekiel (Ch.21)(!)
5. Dogs – Blah Blah 666 – Ezekiel (Ch.21 con’t, Vlad The Impaler introduced with “Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end” 21:29)
6. Vlad The Impaler – GWAR
7. The Girl With The Mechanical Neck Movements – Evil Dick -- Ezekiel (Ch.22, Maggots introduced with “As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof” 22:21)
8. Maggots – GWAR -– Commercial break introduced with “These discovered her nakedness: they took her sons and her daughters, and slew her with the sword” 23:10).
Part 2
1. Cielito Lindo – Blah Blah 666
2. Bloody Pit Of Horror, Pt.1, Zombies, March! – GWAR
3. Home Sexuality – Blah Blah 666 -- Ezekiel (Ch.24)
4. Bloody Pit Of Horror, Pt.2, Come The Carnivor – GWAR
5. Caffeinated Coffee – Bob Evans -- Ezekiel (Ch.25, Gathering Of Ghouls introduced with “I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen” 25:7)
6. Bloody Pit Of Horror, Pt.3, Gathering Of Ghouls – GWAR
7. Expt. In 5:1 – Evil Dick -- Ezekiel (Ch.25, beginning with “I will destroy thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD” 25:7)
8. Paso – Blah Blah 666 -- Ezekiel (Ch.25 con’t)
9. Bloody Pit Of Horror, Pt.4, Storm Coming – GWAR
10. Naval Aviation In Art? – Frank Zappa
11. Sick Of You – GWAR
GWAR setlist at Riddell Center, December 3/10
1. Horror Of Yig
2. Damnation Under God
3. Hail to Genocide
4. Let Us Slay
5. Vlad the Impaler
6. Decay of Grandeur
7. The Private Pain of Sawborg Destructo
8. Crack In The Egg
9. Maggots
10. Bring Back the Bomb
11. Metal Metal Land
12. Pure As The Arctic Snow
13. Beat You To Death
14. Salamanizer
15. Encore: Zombie March / Come The Carnivor / A Gathering of Ghouls / Storm is Coming
16. Sick of You
Notes: This was my fourth GWAR concert, and with each one it gets more difficult to enjoy both the music and the visual spectacle on stage because of the larger crowds. I usually forgo the visual component wherever it interferes with enjoyment of the music. I leave my glasses at home & find a good spot towards the fringes of the pit for dancing. So I didn’t always follow the onstage drama very closely, I think there was some elaborate plot involving the enormous Sawborg Destructo & Bonecrusher. A funny moment was Lady Gaga appearing with some crappy dance music then the band exuberantly pumped out their demonic-utopic ode to Metal Metal Land - & killed Lady Gaga, I assume - I probably still have her blood on my shirt. I could never even name a highlight from this set – I love all of these songs & relished every riff, every solo, every word of Oderous’s lovely poetry & every spurt of vile fluids. I loved Cuttlefish of Cthulhu’s long ejaculation during (I think) Zombies March & there is something absolutely sublime about hearing, after all the metal, the classic rock sing-along of Sick Of You in a thick crowd of bloodied GWAR fans while being shot with a blood cannon (presumably filled with the blood of the victims of previous concerts).

Next Stop Mars
No.93, aired October 20, 2010.
Spoken word was from an episode of the Twilight Zone radio drama titled "Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up."
Probably one of the better episodes in terms of fortuitous synchronicity, one example being Coltrane's 10-minute tenor sax / drums duet with Rashied Ali (from Interstellar Space, 1967) being introduced with the words "If somebody is truly from outer space, they'll just go through the walls anyway, won't they?"
Part 1
1. Martian Graverobber – Forbidden Dimension
2. The Planets, Op.32, Mars, The Bringer Of War – Gustav Holst (composer) / Lost Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra)
3. Photographs From Mars – Diodes
4. Mars – John Coltrane

2. Next Stop Mars – Sun Ra

Small, Hot, Fast & D.O.A.
No.92, aired October 13, 2010.
This show was a primer for the D.O.A. show at the Republik on Thursday night. Their set included To Hell And Back, World War 3, R.C.M.P., The Enemy, This Machine Kills Fascists/Human Bomb, That’s Why I’m An Athiest, I Live In A Car, Waiting For You, Fucked Up Stevie, War (Edwin Starr), The Prisoner, Disco Sucks, Fuck You, The Hockey Song (Stompin Tom Conners), and probably a couple of others that I can’t remember now.
In this episode we continued the interplanetary voyage by visiting Mercury – the first six tracks in Part 2 all pay tribute to the swift & small in some way. As Sun Ra & John Coltrane never (to my knowledge) visited Mercury, the space theme was augmented with three tracks from Ornette Coleman’s Science Fiction and Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson’s Space Guitar.
Part 1
1. Waiting For You – D.O.A.
2. Space Guitar – Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson
3. Liar For Hire – D.O.A.
4. Naval Aviation In Art? – Frank Zappa
5. Science Fiction – Ornette Coleman
6. Set Them Free – D.O.A.
7. The Jungle Is A Skyscraper – Ornette Coleman
8. Police Brutality – D.O.A.
Part 2
1. Hot Little Mama - Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson
2. Mercury – Mahjongg

Infected Mushroom
Three or four weeks ago I was having lunch in Wascana Park and found in the bushes several CDs covered in mud & moisture & mould & did what any good DJ would do, salvaging everything that held some promise. The result was the addition of the following five titles to my playlist:
The Trinity – Sean Paul
Fist of God – MSTRKRFT
Collected – Massive Attack
Hellbilly Deluxe – Rob Zombie
Vicous Delicious – Infected Mushroom
So Episode no.78 was a bit of a departure for Naval Aviation In Audio, featuring tracks from all five of these dance-pop albums.
This episode also featured the opening Chapter of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness on Audiobook.

Strange Celestial Roads ... or Nationalist Fervor?
Episode no.77 celebrated the height of summer by playing all three tracks from Sun Ra’s 1979 jazz-rock exploration Strange Celestial Roads. To add a parallel strange journey, Joseph Conrad’s Heart Of Darkness was played along with Sun Ra, sometimes in the foreground, as if Conrad was on stage with the band, and sometimes receding to the backround, as if you were in a jazz club and were hearing Conrad telling his dark tale at the next table.
And to acknowledge July 1 (which began at the end of the program), we heard some national-themed Canadian punk rock.

Wrong versus Right
Episode no.74, aired May 26, 2010.
Featured “right” & “wrong” songs, plus select chapters [18-24] from Leviticus, the Old Testament book of law and priestly ritual, which provided hilarious moral commentary as various sexual taboos & severe punishments were described to a backing of Charles Mingus’s Hearts' Beat and Shades in Physical Embraces from The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady.
Leviticus 21:9 provided some rather scary (and unintentional!) congruence as the text ordered the burning of promiscuous daughters of priests to the tune of Queen’s Of The Stone Age’s Burn The Witch.

1937. Animal Gravepools
No. 55, aired December 30, 2009.
This was the final of the 4-part "20th Century Zeitgeist" series. Although the 20th Century Zeitgeist concept will continue in some form, examining moments of rupture & transformation in 20th Century culture, this was the final of the four episodes featuring the string quartets of Arnold Schoenberg. Schoenberg's final quartet was composed around 1937, so the episode also featured some swinging jazz from around that year by Count Basie & poetry published 1936-1938 by Dylan Thomas.
In celebration of the dark limbo between solstice & the new year, the theme of Part 1 was the grave, whereas Part 2 was all about wildness - so I guess combined they describe an animal coming out of hibernation - not quite spring yet, but wtf?
Part 1
1. Dark Rapture - Count Basie
2. The Gravedigger - SNFU
3. Mammal Beats - Les Georges Leningrad
4. Graveyard - Butthold Surfers
5. String Quartet No. 4, Op. 37 (Movement 1) - Arnold Schoenberg / New Vienna String Quartet -- Altarwise By Owl-light (I & X) / Twenty-four Years - Dylan Thomas
6. Soup Stain Graves - Rehashed
7. HAY - Butthole Surfers
8. Topsy - Count Basie
9. Bodies In The Wall - SNFU
Part 2
1. Eli Eli Lamma sabacthani - Les Georges Leningrad
2. Wild Life - Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3. String Quartet No. 4, Op. 37 (Movement 1) - Arnold Schoenberg / New Vienna String Quartet -- How Shall My Animal / On No Work of Words - Dylan Thomas
4. Loser At Life/Loser At Death - SNFU
5. Naval Aviation In Audio - Frank Zappa
6. The O-Men - Butthole Surfers
7. I Wanna Be Your Dog - Stooges
8. Doggin' Around - Count Basie
9. Eli Eli Lamma sabacthani - Les Georges Leningrad
