The predominance of the colour white, the columns & arches & garlands in the ruins where the time travellor lands in 802,701 A.D. seem to represent classical culture, as seen through the rear-view mirror of western civilization – the simpleness and innocense, the childishness of the citizens, the fact that the architecture is in ruins, bring to mind Karl Marx’s assessment that the towering achievements of classical culture may represent unreachable standards for modern art, but are in reality the infancy of western culture.

20th Century Zeitgeist 1
Episode 50 begins a new series in which Naval Aviation in Audio will zoom back to key moments in 20th Century music & poetry - moments of change, moments of rupture. This first installment examined the period around 1905, featuring the first of four String Quartets of Arnold Schoenberg, the leading modernist composer for the first half of the century, and Ezra Pound, the lightning rod for the English language avant-garde during that period. And because NAIA is never about sticking to one place or style or period, always restlessly shifting, I also read poems by Anne Szumigalski, the Zeitgeist of Saskchewan & prairie poetry from at least the early 1970s thru to the late 1990s, as well as a selection of more contemporary music.

Guitars & Birds & Freedom
Episode 9 explored the nature of freedom by reading the bird poems (sprung-rhythm Petrarchan sonnets) of 19th Century Jesuit monk Gerard Manley Hopkins with some ground-breaking solo improvizations from the late British guitarist Derek Bailey. Added to the mix were some Zappa, Hendrix, and several tracks from DOA's 2008 release Northern Avenger, named after Joe Keithley's guitar.
AS a dare-gale skylark scanted in a dull cage
Man’s mounting spirit in his bone-house, mean house, dwells—
That bird beyond the remembering his free fells;
This in drudgery, day-labouring-out life’s age.
Though aloft on turf or perch or poor low stage,
Both sing sometÃmes the sweetest, sweetest spells,
Yet both droop deadly sómetimes in their cells
Or wring their barriers in bursts of fear or rage.
(Gerard Manley Hopkins, 1877)
