Gunshots & Bloodletting

Words in this episode come from Take All of Murphy, a story played from Vincent Lam's Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures, an audiobook of true stories from the operating theatre. Lam's descriptions of medical students cutting into their first cadavers were accompanied for the most part by the ethereal instrumentals of The Hylozoists' CD La Nouvelle Gauche, and complemented by the controlled chaos of John Zorn's Naked City, which was itself offset by the low-fi blues groove of The Pack A.D. and violent experimental rock of the Butthole Surfers' Locust Abortion Technician. Aired January 21, 2009.

Guitars & Birds & Freedom

Episode 9 explored the nature of freedom by reading the bird poems (sprung-rhythm Petrarchan sonnets) of 19th Century Jesuit monk Gerard Manley Hopkins with some ground-breaking solo improvizations from the late British guitarist Derek Bailey. Added to the mix were some Zappa, Hendrix, and several tracks from DOA's 2008 release Northern Avenger, named after Joe Keithley's guitar.

AS a dare-gale skylark scanted in a dull cage
Man’s mounting spirit in his bone-house, mean house, dwells—
That bird beyond the remembering his free fells;
This in drudgery, day-labouring-out life’s age.

Though aloft on turf or perch or poor low stage,
Both sing sometímes the sweetest, sweetest spells,
Yet both droop deadly sómetimes in their cells
Or wring their barriers in bursts of fear or rage.

(Gerard Manley Hopkins, 1877)
