Fire & Chains
No.144, aired November 2, 2011. This was one of those episodes where the themes fell beautifully into place as the episode aired. I planned to play some of the hellish first disc of Zappa's Make A Jazz Noise Here, and the creation myths from Ovid's Metamorphoses (which was played from audiobook) happened to contain references to infernal destruction and hard iron - the rest followed in due course ...

Half A Heart
No.86, aired September 1, 2010
This episode was cut short due to a family medical emergency. An interesting episode all the same, featuring segments from Chapter 2 of Heart Of Darkness with Xenakis & Arab-Canadian punks The Sarcastic Mannequins - a morbid serendipity was acheived as the Mannequins were heard yelling "Tandoori!" as Marlowe (the narrator of Heart Of Darkness) contemplated why his shipmates were not eating him.

1927! Upon These Boiling Seas
Episode 53 aired December 16, 2009. This is part 3 of the 4 part "20th Century Zeitgeist" series featuring the string quartets of Arnold Schoenberg. Schoenberg's 3rd String Quartet was composed in 1927 - & by a stroke of luck I happened to select some Louis Armstrong recordings that date from the same year, & by a second stroke of luck chose an accompanying poetic text, from Hart Crane's The Bridge, that was published in 1927!
While it was tempting to name the episode "Monsters & Robots" after the title of Buckethead's CD and Guerrilla Funk Monster's robot references, the concept of boiling is a better description of the hot, popping funk of much of the music.
Part 1
1. Jump Man - Buckethead -- The Harbour Dawn (from The Bridge) - Hart Crane
2. Kaos Rex - Dog Eat Dogma
3. Potato Head Blues - Louis Armstrong
4. Fear On The Bridge (Upon The Boiling Sea I) - 3 Inches of Blood
5. String Quartet No. 3, Op. 30, 1. Moderato - Arnold Schoenberg (composer) / New Vienna String Orchestra -- Ave Maria (from The Bridge) - Hart Crane
6. Lord Of The Storm (Upon The Boiling Sea II) - 3 Inches of Blood
7. robot love serenade - Guerrilla Funk Monster
Part 2
1. Stick Pit - Buckethead -- The River (from The Bridge) - Hart Crane
2. Naval Aviation in Art? - Frank Zappa
3. Ron Donson - Guerrilla Funk Monster
4. String Quartet No. 3, Op. 30, 3. Intermezzo (Allegro Moderato) - Arnold Schoenberg (composer) / New Vienna String Orchestra -- The River (cont'd, from The Bridge) - Hart Crane
5. Isle of Eternal Despair - (Upon The Boiling Sea II) - 3 Inches of Blood
6. burgundy - Guerrilla Funk Monster -- The River (cont'd, from The Bridge) - Hart Crane
7. Revenge of the Double Man - Buckethead -- The River (cont'd, from The Bridge) - Hart Crane
8. Alligator Crawl - Louis Armstrong

Buying In
Episode 27 explored the relation between what it is and what it buys, with help from Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are, an audiobook written by Rob Walker and performed by Robert Fass. All music played was purchased by myself at the annual CJTR garage sale. Naval Aviation in Audio strives to create tension & conflict with audio material, not unity & identity. It therefore refuses the marketing drive to create identity through purchase. As Samual Beckett wrote, "The danger is in the neatness of idenfications." Notes towards a manifesto.
The greatest "finds" at the sale were two CDs by Dog Eat Dogma, the earlier of which, Dogmachine, represented with 4 tracks in this episode, was given to me as a casette tape by the band's lead singer after their set opening for DOA in 1998, in gratitude for the energy I exhibited in front of the stage, because they seriously rocked. And by a lovely coincidence this show also aired the night before DOA played the Distrikt in Regina once again - which is why the hour ended with 3 DOA classics.
Aired June 10, 2009.
Part 1
1. Courage of the Morning - Bob Evans
2. Bad Seed - Dog Eat Dogma
3. Madison 22 - C. R. Avery
4. Naval Aviation in Art? - Frank Zappa
5. Broken Ship - Immaculate Machine

2. No Such Thing As the Future - Immaculate Machine
3. Bill Hicks - C. R. Avery
4. Political Prisoner - Dog Eat Dogma
5. East Van Business Plan - C. R. Avery
6. Mon Dieu - Dog Eat Dogma
7. Search - Jon Ballantyne
8. Liar For Hire - DOA
9. America the Beautiful - DOA
10. Waiting For You - DOA
