1927! Upon These Boiling Seas

Episode 53 aired December 16, 2009. This is part 3 of the 4 part "20th Century Zeitgeist" series featuring the string quartets of Arnold Schoenberg. Schoenberg's 3rd String Quartet was composed in 1927 - & by a stroke of luck I happened to select some Louis Armstrong recordings that date from the same year, & by a second stroke of luck chose an accompanying poetic text, from Hart Crane's The Bridge, that was published in 1927!

While it was tempting to name the episode "Monsters & Robots" after the title of Buckethead's CD and Guerrilla Funk Monster's robot references, the concept of boiling is a better description of the hot, popping funk of much of the music.

20th Century Zeitgeist 1

Episode 50 begins a new series in which Naval Aviation in Audio will zoom back to key moments in 20th Century music & poetry - moments of change, moments of rupture. This first installment examined the period around 1905, featuring the first of four String Quartets of Arnold Schoenberg, the leading modernist composer for the first half of the century, and Ezra Pound, the lightning rod for the English language avant-garde during that period. And because NAIA is never about sticking to one place or style or period, always restlessly shifting, I also read poems by Anne Szumigalski, the Zeitgeist of Saskchewan & prairie poetry from at least the early 1970s thru to the late 1990s, as well as a selection of more contemporary music.

Part 2

2. Experiment - Voidvod
3. String Quartet No. 1 in D minor, Op. 7 (movement 2 - MaBig (Heiter)) - Arnold Schoenberg -- Want of [thorn] Want of [Edh]; The Musicologist - Anne Szumigalski

5. Morning Bride - James Blood Ulmer

One Year Anniversary Special

Episode 49 marks the beginning of Naval Aviation in Audio's 2nd year on air. In celebration, the first half was devoted to Frank Zappa's Lather album, 4-LPs of original music delivered to & rejected by Warner Brothers in 1977. In response, Zappa delivered the album to his audience for free via radio, inviting listeners to make tape-recorded copies. Although most of the material was released in the late 1970s in single LPs, it is the original running order on Lather, as released by the Zappa Family Trust as a 3-CD set in 1996, that inspire the cross-generic programming of this radio show.

The second half featured exclusively musical artists that I had never heard of before this past year of programming music for radio.

Buying In

Episode 27 explored the relation between what it is and what it buys, with help from Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are, an audiobook written by Rob Walker and performed by Robert Fass. All music played was purchased by myself at the annual CJTR garage sale. Naval Aviation in Audio strives to create tension & conflict with audio material, not unity & identity. It therefore refuses the marketing drive to create identity through purchase. As Samual Beckett wrote, "The danger is in the neatness of idenfications." Notes towards a manifesto.

The greatest "finds" at the sale were two CDs by Dog Eat Dogma, the earlier of which, Dogmachine, represented with 4 tracks in this episode, was given to me as a casette tape by the band's lead singer after their set opening for DOA in 1998, in gratitude for the energy I exhibited in front of the stage, because they seriously rocked. And by a lovely coincidence this show also aired the night before DOA played the Distrikt in Regina once again - which is why the hour ended with 3 DOA classics.
