The Golfer's Rite of Spring

Aired March 25, 2009. This episode celebrated the Vernal Equinox by recasting Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. In place of the virgin dancing herself to death was sportswriter & virgin caddy Rick Reilly's death-dance for the primadonnas of pro golf - Reilly's audiobook Who's Your Caddy was played with Stravinsky's violent modern ballet. And just to keep things interesting, tracks from two Victoria, BC punk bands, The Dayglo Abortions & Nomeansno, were played between movements.

Electricity

This electric-charged episode Aired March 18, 2009, featuring music from AC/DC's High Voltage, April Wine's Electric Jewels, 2 pieces of electronic music from Frank Zappa & the Mothers' We're Only In It For the Money, Stefan Jaworzyn & Alan Wilkinson, & electric guitar rock by Vancouver's The Northwest Company & Long Time Comin'. Passages were read from Tom McNichol's AC/DC: The Savage Tale of the First Standards War & from David Bodanis' Electric Universe. The chapter from McNichol's book entitled Killing an Elephant provided the perfect textual accompaniment to the cathartic shocks of Stefan Jaworzyn's electric guitar with the painful wail of Alan Wilkinson's baritone sax.

De Re Metallica

Episode 17 concerned metal. Georgius Agricola's founding work of metallurgy, De Re Metallica (on the Nature of Metals) was read with various keyboard works by J.S. Bach & alongside metal bands Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden & Pericardium, whose Anthems of Anger pummeled my eardrums & incited me to frenzied dancing in Regina's live music clubs in the late 1990s.

Martian Acid

This sixteenth episode featured the audiobook version of H.G. Wells' sci-fi classic The War of the Worlds, especially a corrosive chapter in which the entire arsenal of human weaponry is dissolved in liquid mountains of green Martian acid. This text was played over & alongside music from The Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paradaiso U.F.O.'s Have You Seen The Other Side Of The Sky?, as well as Motocaster's Acid Rock & various artists released by Mint Records.
